Winter League Update: Puerto Rico – We Have an Upset!

In Puerto Rico, we have an upset.  Los Indios de Mayaguez won their series over the number one seeded Lobos de Arecibo.  Boy!…Don’t they look happy?!
(Newsclips: El Vocero)
vocero.com
They will face the winner of game 7 in the series between
Los Criollos de Caguas vs. Los Gigantes de Carolina.
Caguas won game six to force a 7th game tie-breaker.  Caguas was mired in last place at the holiday break.  They are one win away from an improbable date versus Mayaguez for the Puerto Rican League Championship.
The winner of that series moves on to the Caribbean Series.

Winter Leagues Update…2010 Carribean Series getting closer.

The Final Four in PUERTO RICO is set.  When I made my first winter update from P.R. los Criolles de Caguas were mired in last place.  They played the hottest baseball down the stretch and finished in third place and earned themselves a playoff birth.  Lino Rivera managed the hot team while Edgardo Baez basically put Caguas on his back and slugged them to wins in 14 of their last 23 games.

The final four are designated A Series and B Series. 4 out of 7 wins.
Los Lobos de Arecibo will play Los Indios de Mayaguez in the A Series.  The B Series has Los Gigantes de Carolina opposed by Los Criollos de Caguas.

BILL PULSIPHER is opening the series for Los Lobos.  Pat Kelly, should be a familiar name to you, is the manager of Arecibo.  Of course you know Carlos Delgado, and he’ll be seeing action for Los Gigantes.

I just want to get some words behind these pictures for you.  At the conclusion of the season, the last team in the division which does not make the playoffs, those players are put into a draft for the other four teams to select from for the remainder of the playoffs and Caribbean series..  Juan Padilla, who pitched effectively this winter for PONCE, Los Leones, was the top pick to be had.  He was picked by Los Indios de Mayaguez.  Fernando Cabrera went to Los Lobos de Arecibo.

By the way, they’ve been suffering rain-outs in the initial games.

In MEXICO, The Final Four is now the Final Two.
Los Venados de Mazatlan won their series 4 games to 1 over Los Yaquis de Ciudad Obregon.
Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo defeated Los Tomateros de Culiacan.

Mazatlan will square off against Los Naranjeros for the PacificMexicanLeague Championship.
Vinny Castilla is still kicking it for the Naranjeros of Hermosillo!  There’s many recognizable names in this league.

Winter League Update from Puerto Rico

Carlos Delgado hit his first home run for the Gigantes de Carolina on Jan 7th.  Previous to the home run he had 3 hits in 8 at-bats.  With Carolina’s victory over los Criollos de Caguas Thursday, los Gigantes clinched a playoff spot, and are currently in second place.  Los Lobos de Arecibo clinched the division a week ago.

It’s getting closer to tournament time.  Venezuela has most of their playoff teams set, and likewise Mexico.

Jan. 6th – el DIA de LOS REYES. Winter League Update from PUERTO RICO

!Feliz Dia de Los Reyes..!

!Buenos Dias BloggerHood!  January 6th is Three Kings Day.

The TrolleyBlogger jumped a ferry [ wink*wink ; ) ] for a WINTER LEAGUE update from el Liga de Beisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico.

There’s nothing going on with Alex Cora getting hurt.  My uncle says no news is good news and Alex is just looking foward to spring training.  At the time los Criollos de Caguas were in last place.  They’ve since won five in a row when play resumed after the holiday break.  They’re currently in third place now sporting a record of 15-19.  Arecibo y los Lobos are still in first place by 3.5 games over los Gigantes (Giants) de Carolina in second.

Aaron Bates of Caguas, on the RedSox 40-man roster, is having a nice winter for himself batting .300 plus.  He plays first-base for the Criolles.  I think Ivan Rodriguez is just hanging out for some work out and practice because he isn’t playing much at all.  If your interested, Ruben Sierra is still kickin’ it in the P.R. League too.

The biggest story since Sunday would be Carlos Delgado’s return to active participation.  He got one hit Sunday, for los Gigantes de Carolina.  In this article Carlos said , “I haven’t seen live pitching since May ’09.  I felt real good at the plate.  It was a step in the right direction.”  I will make no secret of this – I want the 37 year old Delgado back on the Mets on a one year deal.  He is 27 home runs shy of 500.  He is 88 rbi shy of 1600 for his career.  I want him to do it in a Mets’ uniform.  Those two numbers are VERY attainable.  I thought last year would be the year for those milestones.  His hip said otherwise.  Carlos also said in the article he has no fear of sliding.

In celebration of Dia de Los Reyes, today’s game between los Criollos and los Indios de Mayaguez (mayaguez Indians) in Caguas will be free to the fans and public.  Carlos Beltran affiliates himself with the Mayaguez team.

There it is folks, your Puerto Rican League update.  !En mi casa se habla Beisbol, siempre!  Time to load the Trolley back on the ferry and steam home to Brooklyn.  Adios deste mi Isla de Encanto.

Miguel.

METS, Alex Cora, Winter Leagues…& “RaysRenegade”

RaysRenegade…..THIS ONE’S FOR YOU BUDDY!!

I,  like many people this morning spent time on the phone connecting with loved ones and the like.  My most trusted person I call for my doses of Winter League updates and inside stories is none other than my Uncle.  He attends games of the Puerto Rican Pro League religiously and is connected through friendships and from umpiring.

He shared some news with me this morning and it affects the Mets too.  ALEX CORA injured himself during this winter season and I believe he’s packing up his things and foregoing the rest of his work for the/Los Criolles de Caguas.

The news is extremely preliminary.  I can’t stress that enough.   I’m probably the first to “report” this, and who knows, the story may not even get out depending what kind of injury, if any he incurred.  I feel obligated to inform you, and as practice I don’t normally offer family information, but yes, I, we, me and Alex are related….obviously Joey Cora too.  Their Aunt, my mom, is here opening up presents with me today.  Again,  I do not know what kind of injury Alex Cora sustained and I certainly don’t know what this means to the Mets.  I was told this morning as an aside during my conversation with my uncle.  I’m not even sure when  it might have happened either.  So, until then perhaps we should just go on with our lives.

But while I have your attention, here’s your little Winter League update.  As of this post, Alex’s team, los CRIOLLOS de CAGUAS were in last place sporting a 10-19 record, 7 games behind the first place  LOBOS de ARECIBO who have a 16-11 record.  The league is currently on holiday break.

If I may….Lobos are ”The Wolves” and the Criollos, translated would be the “Originals”.  There, this concludes today’s Puerto Rican Pro League update.

When I learn something more, I will definitelty pass it along to you good folks.  Here’s a couple of pics to compliment this..  One picture is the cap worn by los Criollos de Caguas about 20 years ago.  It belonged to another uncle of mine who passed away 10 years ago this year.  I kept many items he had.  And here’s a pic of their current cap too.  The banner is from the Leones de Ponce (the Ponce Lions).  It is signed by most of the team sometime in the late 80′s.  I  forgot what year exactly.  Two notable autographs are that of JOEY CORA and CARMELO MARTINEZ.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday everyone.  Be well.
