WEEK 7

FIRST ORDER of BUSINESS

PROPOSAL to AMEND

HOVVG CONSTITUTION

The Matter at Hand:

A proposal to set a minimum amount of votes necessary to gain election

into HoVVG, considering the Majority Rules/Ties Lose system in place.

The Motion to Amend comes from the desk of:

“WRIGLEY REGULAR”

He makes his case:

P.S. – Since I’m making my opinion known, I might as well go all the way. ;) I love the idea of the HoVVG players and I like your rules save one. I know you just had a vote on amendments and I’ll throw one out for future reference. The 50% majority is fine, but I would require a minimum number of yes votes.

* Leave system just the way it is. (HoVVG Recommended)

*Set minimum Votes for election at 4 Votes

* Set minimum Votes for election at 5 Votes

* Set minimum Votes for election at 6 Votes

***

HoVVG has averaged 9.7 votes per player over the first 6 weeks.

NOTE:

From the Grand Exalted High Omniscient Master of HoVVG ~ Me.

Maybe this is too early in the process to field such a proposal?  It’s not like we have 400+

Baseball writers.  We are just a MOM and POP hall of recognition.

But I am committed to the democratic process.

That’s the proposal

VOTE!

NOTE:

from the Grand Exalted High Omniscient Master of HoVVg ~ Me:

I would caution trying to sanitize our HoVVG too much.  This is more of an emotional exercise where equations, scientifics and standards aren’t too important.  This is NOT the Hall of Fame with all their criteria.  This a place for our pleasures and quirks and hang-ups; something Baseball seems to take from us more and more often.  Of course this is just my opinion.  And the VOTE is at hand.

NOTE:

From the Grand Exalted High Omniscient Master of HoVVG ~ Me

Everyone, I’d like to introduce you to DETLEF, my new friend and blogging Live from Germany.

Detlef, meet everyone.

He started a Yankees Blog here in the Blogosphere.  Show him Love.

He is a grown man not needing me to speak for him.  He expressed to me he is somewhat new to the game of Baseball and not exactly versed in our game’s extensive history.  He was slightly unfamiliar with last week’s selections.  We exchanged e-mails clarifying some things about our HoVVG.  He made a suggestion for a candidate and I will PERMIT IT! ~ Based on HoVVG Constitution the player is retired (but not dead although sometimes I’m sure he wishes he was with all the trouble he’s in…anyway) And HoVVG Const. states any HoVVG Member subsequently voted into the HOF will be given an EVICTION PARTY.  I felt compelled to warn him as to what kind of reaction his candidate might be in store for thinking he may not be well received.  I explained we at HoVVG have loose morals and the commenting may get a bit “snarky” (?).  Anyway, Detlef understands totally and welcomes and relishes the controversy that may await his candidate.  Language is no problem for him and trust me…He is well equipped and quite ready for you buncha animals (my word!).   : D

Detlef, I hope I did not offend with this preface.

So without further delay:

“The German Blog”

His candidate for consideration this week is:

ROGER CLEMENS

He makes his case:

“I want to nominee William “Rocket” Roger Clemens for the HOVVG. I think I mustn’t write about the complete statistics because everyone could read them on the pages of the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros, the 4 teams he played for in 23 years at the big leagues. Especially two games of him I won’t forget ever. The first showed that it’s not so good to struggle too hard against him, otherwise he struggled back in a way you don’t expect. Of course I mean game 2 of the Subway Series in 2000 and at least Mike Piazza still knows what I’m talking about. (Sorry, I can’t take a grin out of my face.) The other game was one of the most dramatic I know: the loss at game 7 in the World Series 2001 against the D-backs. 2001 was his year until then (record 20-3) but all will remember this final loss, which falls into place in that awful year for New York ( but that has to do only very less with baseball). Beside his nickname Rocket I also called him Willie the K-man. The K wasn’t only the sign for the countless numbers of strikeouts he threw but also was the starting letter in the names of his four sons (Koby, Kory, Kacy, Kody). 4 is a good number for Roger: 4 teams he played for, he is one of only 4 pitchers with more than 4,000 strikeouts, he was the 4th pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues, he has 4 sons and he tried to retire 4 times what he finally did in 2007 – and with a little smile I might say: I’m proud that he did it as a Yankee.”

That’s his guy.  That’s his case.

“Above The Shoulders”

His candidate for consideration this week is:

FRED LYNN

He makes his case:

“Though his career was cut a bit short due to injury, Lynn was one of the league’s best center fielders for almost a decade. From 1975 to 1986, he posted a .291/.370/.494 line and averaged 36 doubles, 26 home runs, 96 runs, 98 rbi, and 76 walks per 162 games. In addition to his heralded MVP and ROY 1975, Lynn made 9 straight all-star games, from 1975 to 1983, and won 4 career gold gloves. Lynn’s longevity issues kept him from ever getting serious consideration from the HoF voters. The Baseball Page.com lists him as their 15th greatest centerfielder of all-time, but also as one of the most injury-plagued of all-time. Instead of looking at what Lynn wasn’t able to do, we can look at what he did do: play a very, very good centerfield.”

That’s his guy.  That’s his case.

“Minoring in Baseball”

His candidate for consideration this week is:

MICKEY TETTLETON

He makes his case:

Mickey Tettleton

“Who, at this point, cannot imagine, right now, Mickey up at the plate…bat all but parallel to the ground, HUGE wad of chew in his cheek, ready to crush the ball…or miss it completely. Tettleton’s numbers don’t due him much justice, but he should get points simply for being unique and for being a bad ***. He was able to pound out 245 home runs and 732 RBI’s in his career, though. He was also a two time All-Star and was regarded as one of the best hitting catchers in the American League during the late 80′s and early 90′s. He was a three time Silver Slugger award winner (1989, 1991, 1992), and hit over 30 home runs four times in his career. He also should earn some points for appearing in the movie Little Big League as himself. Please consider Mickey as a quality candidate for this weeks HOVVG.”

Thank you.

That’s his guy.  That’s his case.

“METrospection and More”

My candidate for consideration this week is:

EDDIE GAEDEL

 Here’s my case:

C’mon…the guy was 3 foot 7 inches and 65 pounds of pure TNT!  He probably had a heart bigger than the mass of Prince Fielder tucked inside of his little frame.  He never recorded an out in the Major Leagues!  You know the story ~ He came up during the second game of a double-header as a pinch hitter for the old St. Louis Browns in 1951.  He walked on four pitches and was replaced for a pinch hitter.

His number “1/8″ (that’s right ~ one/eighth) is retired in the Baseball Hall of Fame but sadly he himself remains without the due recognition his jersey received.  However small in stature let us open the doors of our HoVVG for this GIANT of a Ballplayer.  Think about it ~ 3’7″ > How much courage does one need to go out there and expect to be taken seriously!  I’m sure Eddie treated his one at bat with dignity and respect which is so much more than we can say about a bunch of the knuckleheads who soil our game today.

That’s my guy.  That’s my case.

VOTE!

Minimum of 4 votes — yes

Clemens — NO. Juicer and a jerk.

Lynn — YES.

Tettleton — YES. I would add that his power numbers were sound for the pre-ridiculous era.

Gaedel — NO. But the originality is appreciated.

Welcome to the MLB Blog world Detslef! Nice case with Clement but my answer is NO!
Miinum of 4 votes.
Mike,
I’ll come back and vote for the rest. Thanks for inquiring about me. I’ve been on the DL since Friday morning with a case of food poisoning. I am heading to the doctor soon ’cause I still have this pain on my right side .

Dear Grand Exalted High Omniscient Master of HoVVg !
(or to shorten it: Hi Mike!)
Thanks for your nice words to introduce me, they didn’t offend me at all. Somewhat new is a good expression about my knowledge and experiences in baseball. Germany is fallow land for baseball, most people don’t even know that we have own leagues and clubs here. You also can’t watch ballgames on TV because it isn’t shown here. Only when the World Series get started you can see half an hour each day of play on “German Sports Television” – that’s all. So to watch mlb.tv this year for the first time gives me such a lot of new knowledge and impressions that I say: I’m the greenhorn here in the club. But of course, I’ve seen a lot of scenes before and read a lot of in the Internet. I’m interested in baseball for about 20 years and after some times of looking around I decided to become a Yankee fan. I made this decision in 1996 and you all know how that season ended for the Yanks. From that time on I was captured.

Now coming back to week 7 of HOVVG:

- a YES from me to set the minimum votes for election at 4 votes.
- can I vote for my own player? Then of course I will vote for Roger, because it wouldn’t make sense to name him and then don’t give him my vote.
- as posted from me for last weeks players I also don’t know the other ones mentioned above. So I would like to take an abstention of voting to avoid a NO. Might that be ok? Otherwise you must count this as a NO because I wouldn’t vote for someone I don’t know.

A little addition to Emma: thanks for the welcome, very nice. I’ve just read some notes at your blog and was pleased to see you on a photo together with Joe Torre. I still love him, he was really a great team manager for the Bombers. Good to see him still in business.

So thanks for tonight (here it’s nearly 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning), I’ll retire now. See you soon.

Detlef.

‘Minoring In Baseball’

Roger Clemens – I can’t stand this guy, I really can’t. Throwing at hitters, Yelling at umps, Lying before Congress, PED’s, Throwing friends under the bus, and Treating teammates like a cast of extras in the ‘It’s All About Roger’ show. That’s what I know and suspect about Roger outside the lines. Inside the lines, he was one of the best. —— YES!!

Fred Lynn – I think Lynn perfectly epitomizes what HoVVG is. Lynn’s submitter suggests that Fred may not be in the HOF because of longevity issues. The truth is, Fred Lynn played 17 seasons in the majors and finished his career at the age of 38. He’s 249th on the all-time list of games played. He played more games in his career than current long time vets like Vlad Guerrero or Todd Helton have played in theirs. Fred Lynn is not in the HOF because he was VVG but not great. ——- YES!!

Mickey Tettleton – I’m really torn on this one. My initial reaction to seeing his name was …no way. I looked at his career numbers and again said…..no way. But I wanted to really make sure so I compared his numbers vs every other catcher in baseball history. I was surprised. 11th all-time in homers, 25th in RBI, and 18th in OPS. Not great, but he holds up well against his brothers behind the mask. I think I could change my mind on this guy every day and never be happy, but today it’s a —- YES!!

Eddie Gaedel – Short answer is ——NO!!
http://wrigleyregular.mlblogs.com/

OK I almost forgot to vote myself:

On AMENDMENT ~ Leave it the same.
CLEMENS ~ NO ~ because his wife does steroids! LOL
LYNN ~ YES ~ One of my favorite all time players.
TETTLETON ~ WOW toughest one for me to vote on by far! People need to remember he was a catcher. He carried a big stick. He had a nice stretch. In that stretch he was very good compared to other catchers ~ Not great. He’s in…YES.
GAEDEL ~ My little guy! Yes!

SEND IN E-MAILS FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF ~ HOVVG ~ to tripletoright@yahoo.com

Totals as of Saturday night:

AMENDMENT PROPOSAL:
5 votes ~ for a 4 vote minimum
